Crumbling driveways suck! Not only do you have to be extra cautious about stumbling over cracks and loose bits of rock, you also have to deal with sand and dust getting into your home and your yard. So what’s the secret to a durable driveway? One word: Asphalt.
Unlike block paving and concrete, asphalt is relatively cheap, easy to install, and easy to fix. While concrete driveways last up to 30 years, the material is prone to cracking and can’t be repaired with DIY fixes. However, asphalt driveways are resilient and can usually be repaired without the help of a professional.
For homeowners on a tight budget, asphalt should be your top choice for a driveway paving project.

A common misconception is that bitumen is the same as asphalt, and you’ll often find resources using the terms asphalt driveways and bitumen driveways interchangeably. While these two materials are related to one another, they are definitely not the same substance!
Asphalt is a combination of aggregates (sand, rock, gravel, etc.), filler, and binder. Bitumen, on the other hand, is a sticky, tarry substance that keeps asphalt together. While bitumen can be used to pave roads, it usually results in looser rocks that wear down over time.
The cost of installing or repairing asphalt driveways in Perth and Western Australia averages at around $20 to $40 per square metre. But this is still subject to change following a thorough inspection of the site by our team. We look at the amount of damage found on the asphalt surface, the project size and surface area shape, number of car parks, and requirements for the paving base.
Installing a new asphalt driveway can take anywhere between one to two days, depending on the work needed to be done on the base. In most cases, old paving must be removed completely before any new sub-base is added. Around six to eight inches of aggregate stone base is laid out onto the surface area before about 1/4 to three inches of asphalt is placed on top. We then smooth and compact the base layer with machinery. Once the base has settled, we pave the asphalt with a heavy roller, treat the edges, and allow the mixture to cure over the next three to five days.
During the curing process, clients are advised not to drive their vehicles on the newly asphalted surface, as tire tracks can leave marks and dents on the asphalt.
While asphalt repair is easy to do at home, it’s always advisable to call in professional services once you experience an issue – lest you risk damaging your newly installed asphalt surface.
